A year ago I uploaded my first YouTube video. It was rough — bad audio, over-edited, trying too hard to be entertaining. I almost didn’t post it.
Now I have a channel, a brand (bythebug), and a different relationship with my own work. Here’s what I learned.
You already know more than you think
The biggest mental block for engineers who want to make content is “who am I to teach this?” But the bar isn’t being the world’s foremost expert. The bar is knowing more than the person watching — and being able to explain it clearly.
I’m not the best engineer in the world. But I can explain Kafka consumer groups in a way that clicks for someone who’s been staring at the docs for two hours. That’s enough.
The camera makes you a better engineer
This sounds backwards, but making content forces you to actually understand what you’re explaining. I’ve caught bugs in my own thinking while writing a script. I’ve realized I didn’t really know why something worked the way I thought it did.
Teaching is the fastest path to deep understanding. The camera is just an accountability mechanism.
Consistency beats quality early on
My first 10 videos were not good. But they existed, and that mattered. Algorithms reward regularity. More importantly, you learn faster by shipping imperfect things than by polishing things that never go out.
The video I was least confident about did the best. You genuinely cannot predict what will land.
The dual identity is the brand
Being both a practicing engineer and a content creator isn’t a conflict — it’s the point. The videos are better because I’m actually building things. The engineering is better because I have to explain it. They feed each other.
If you’ve been thinking about starting, start. The first video is the hardest. Everything after that is just iteration.
